Trainings & Workshops


All trainings provided are considered Continuing Education (CE) courses where participants can earn CE units if they qualify. You must be a licensed mental health professional in California, who holds a MFT, LCSW, LEP, or LPCC credential to receive CE units.

Cultural Awareness When Working With African-Americans

Training Description:

This is a three hour training that will review racism, oppression, and discrimination, with a particular emphasis on how these things affect the African-American community. This course unpacks the importance of not overlooking the cultural aspects of African-American clients, but the course rather encourages one to embrace the African-American culture and invite it into the therapeutic relationship and work.

The course schedule is as follows:

  • A review of African-American history (1.5 hours)
  • A lecture on effective ways to work with the African-American community (1.5 hours)


Helping The African-American Community Cope With Trauma

Training Description:

This is a three hour training that will review trauma within the African-American community. Particular emphasis will be placed on understanding the different forms of trauma that affect the African-American community, and coping skills that help African-Americans manage their symptoms of trauma. This course shines light on the historical ways African-Americans have coped with trauma in the past, and the importance of examining those coping skills as a way to potentially assist African-Americans in coping with their trauma. Additionally, participants will learn symptoms of vicarious trauma that may impact their ability to effectively help African-Americans cope with trauma, along with a brief discussion of self care strategies providers can engage in to assist them with managing their own vicarious trauma.

The course schedule is as follows:

  • A review of the different forms of trauma in the African-American community (1 hour)
  • A lecture on historical African-American coping skills that are helpful in the present day (1 hour)
  • A discussion on the impact vicarious trauma has on African-American clients (1 hour)
